A Tribute to Rich's World

Rich's World

If you do not know of the fabulous Rich's World, please remove yourself from beneath the rock under which you've been hiding and visit this amazing site pronto.  He's got a whole bunch of sneaky stuff hidden in his website.  In the following paragraphs, I will expose some of these hidden goodies and reveal their secrets... So if you want to head on over to Rich's World first and discover and crack the hidden content yourself, please READ NO FURTHER and click on the delightfully large and bold hyperlink to travel to...

Rich's World!

For those of you interested to know what secrets have been unlocked, continue on.  All pictures and whatnot are obviously Rich's.

What has been discovered?

Rich continuously adds new puzzles and hidden goodies to his site in all sorts of different places.  I am attempting to present all findings in chronological order-- starting with the oldest stuff and ending with the stuff that's just popped up recently!

Starting at the very beginning, this graphic appears along the right-hand side of the RW index page:

Page: http://pages.cthome.net/richsworld/index.html

The Kryptonian writing beneath "...Smallville Secrets revealed" reads KOWATCHE.  I initially thought this was a misspelling of "Kawatche," but Rich informed me that some of the initial articles about the Caves spelled the tribe's name in this style before the official version was picked.

Click on the Kryptonian text to be taken to a page full of secrets.

This page has quite a lot to it, but start by scrolling down until this part of the page shows:

Click on the S-shield-shaped indentation.

Page: http://pages.cthome.net/richsworld/rosetta.html

Aside from providing the Kryptonian to English translation guide, another message in Kryptonian appears.

The message reads as follows:

Ezra's secret symbol challenge gives you 50000 bonus points in Ezra Small Challenge by typing CJBEPPO in upper case in the box on the lower right of Ezra's picture and the clicking the picture.

This is a tip for those of you who've played the fun Ezra Small Challenge, available for download at http://pages.cthome.net/richsworld/Ezras_Challenge.html.

After you're familiar with the Kryptonian to English (including numerals), we can go back to the Secrets page for more interesting discoveries.

Page: http://pages.cthome.net/richsworld/secrets.html

This encoded writing is the first thing visible on the page of secrets.  The decoded text reads as follows:

Message from the past tells hidden secrets.  An entry from the diary of Ezra Small can be found by replacing the word secret in the url of this page in your browser above with ll07t5gs1.

So the clue here should be relatively simple to implement.  In your browser window, type: http://pages.cthome.net/richsworld/Ll07T5GS1.html.

Following the link takes you to a page that simply reads "Tip #1318."  If you Google this strange hint, it leads you to SnowDays, home of the Snowflakes... And we never would have found the Snowflakes without you, Rich, so thank you!

Now, it's time to go all the way back to the index for more secret stuff.

Page: http://pages.cthome.net/richsworld/masks.html

And this is where things get interesting.  The Kryptonian paragraph next to the strange symbol reads as follows:

A line as the unending horizon
A curve as the rolling hill side
A point as a distant bird
A ray as the rising sun

KSite's Capt~Placeholder!!! points out this is dialogue from the 6 March 1994 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called "Masks."  This explains the name of the page all of this secret stuff is hidden!  According to the good Capt, "The episode was about the remnants of a civilization's cultural information surviving in a comet-sized 'ship' that begins to take over Data (an android) and, through him, takes over the Enterprise."  He suggests taking a look at this page for more information.  Definitely sounds like a Brainiac spoiler!

I Googled Egyptian hieroglyphs and was able to (roughly) translate this text to read...

Clark Kent had a job.  I just want to go on a date.

This is something Buffy Summers said in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer called "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date."

The numeric code was easily broken.  Letters A-Z were represented by numbers 01-26.  When decoded, the following message was revealed:

What are the mathematics of tears?
Amira, time out of mind.

"The Mathematics of Tears" was an episode of Andromeda (airdate 29 Jan 2001).  The second line is also a reference to Andromeda; Smallville's own Erica Durance played a character named Amira in an episode called "Time Out of Mind" (airdate 3 May 2004).  Posters in the KSite forums (see this thread) who are familiar with the episode hypothesize that these recent tidbits hint at an episode explaining the destruction of Krypton...

I had this one halfway cracked when KSite's kido posted the solution: The last one to kill a bad guy buys the beer.  This is a line from 1998's Lost in Space.  Anyone else sensing a space theme here?  KSite's Capt jokes that since this line was said by the character played by Matt LeBlanc, this is a reference to Smallville slaughtering Joey in the ratings... And that poor Matt will be buying the beer!

Again, using my good friend Google, I was able to determine that this translates roughly to...

Nehem is backwards.

What?  What is a... A nehem?  Name?  Ahhhh, KSite's ms.c. points out Mehen (Nehem backwards) "is both an ancient Egyptian god that looks like a snake and an ancient board game based upon the god.  The board game coils around in a circle with spaces/scales as steps in the game.  The players are represented by pieces in the shape of LIONS and marbles.  It's a race game to get to the middle although there seem to be different theories on how it was played. It's the only ancient Egyptian game made for multiple players -- All the others were apparently designed for only two."

Oh my. I don't even know what to say about this.  Sorry folks, I guess I'm still in the archiving process before moving on to the codebreaking process!

See above box, heh.

Call me vain as a peacock, but I like this little snippet because it references this site!  If you read each word backwards (maybe that's what the above Egyptian hieroglyphs were about?), it reads...

Ä.╙.'.A Brainwave 0810051008 on SESPS forum.

Yes, someone known as "Brainwave" (Molly Griggs' email host in Season 3's "Delete") has posted on the SESPS forums....  In fact, on August 10, 2005 at 10:08 PM, this individual posted a code similar to the Ä.╙.'.A code....

@╝╚°ü

Similarly, a third code hides inside a news story on Rich's site (see the Local News page)...

...@-°ü

What do these mysterious codes mean?  Can anyone figure it out?  The fabulous JP Newland has cracked the first mysterious set of symbols, and I'm blushingly proud she has!  Apparently, if you use an Alt+Num keystrokes translator to translate the symbols, the resulting string reads 65.39.211.142... Ping this address, and what do you get?  www.ezrasmall.com!  Wow!  Before I get too full of myself, we've got to figure out what those other codes mean!

Veaglarwen points out that if you substitute a for 1, i for 3, and o for 4, the message Silicon Avatar is revealed.  "Silicon Avatar" is an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.  According to Tyrrath, it's about "a crystalline entity that destroys all life in its path; it turns out the entity is in communication with and is being manipulated/controlled by Data's evil android brother Lore.  Perhaps analogous to Brainiac and his intention of destroying humanity on Earth?"

I changed the graphic on this one a bit to make it fit into the table.  Once again, KSite's Capt was the first to break the code.  What amounts to the first line in my graphic here is a straight Kryptonian-to-English translation and reads E is Z and Z is E and so it is for these pairs.  The rest of the passage, the Capt deduced, reads When you close your eyes, do you like what you see inside your mind?  The Capt points out these are lyrics from Dishwalla's "Once in a While."  Rich, are you asking us whether we're enjoying all of this extra content?  Because assuredly... We are.

Lt. B.G. Robinson was Lois and Clark was Princeton football star.

This message can be discovered by highlighting the black space right underneath the "Hidden Messages?" heading at the top of the page (thanks, Veaglarwen!).  Teri Hatcher (who played Lois on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) guest-starred as Lt. Bronwyn Gail Robinson in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation called "The Outrageous Okona" (1988).  Teri's co-star Dean Cain, who played Clark Kent/Superman, was supposed to be a football star at Princeton, but a knee injury sidelined him and brought him into the world of acting.

KEOPS TSUMAI CY 9683

In an episode of Andromeda called "Pitiless as the Sun," Keops D'ao Tsumai ("Fortunes," CY 9683, 301 AFC) asks,

We are not the masks we wear.
But if we don them, do we not become them?

Remember that the name of the page with all of this secret stuff is called "masks.htm."

3T F1LLS T4 M2 T4 T2LL

Substitute A for 1, E for 2, I for 3, O for 4, and U for 5.  Then, substitute S for 0.  Then, this message is revealed:

Kal-El, my son, as keeper of the archives of Krypton, it falls to me to tell you the darkest episode in our planet's history.

KSite's ms.c. informs us this is a direct quote from Lara in Superman II regarding Krypton's fate.

.su nartuo dik yella taht nehw looc t'nsaw ssob eht

It's backwards.  Should read:

The boss wasn't cool when that alley kid outran us.

thebrains07 remembers this as a line from "The Vengeance Chronicles."  No one can catch The Flash!

3:09:01AM 4:01:02AM 6:05:03AM 8:05:04AM 11:05:02AM 5:21:02AM 7:15:02AM 7:16:03AM 10:05:04AM 11:13:01AM 5:19:01AM 10:18:05AM 9:18:03AM 10:20:03AM 4:19:03AM 6:08:02AM 9:05:04AM 6:19:03PM 7:19:04AM 8:23:01AM 10:06:02AM 2:04:01PM 5:05:03PM 3:15:02PM 4:08:05PM 9:12:02AM 8:18:03AM 9:01:01AM 9:25:07AM 2:05:02PM 2:05:06PM 4:23:01AM 5:18:03AM 7:03:01AM 5:05:04AM 9:01:05AM 8:05:02AM 6:20:01AM 10:01:01AM 9:04:06AM 4:20:03PM 6:11:04PM 2:09:04PM 5:20:01PM 3:20:01PM 4:04:01PM 6:01:02PM 2:04:07PM 12:19:01PM 12:15:02PM 2:03:03PM 2:04:05PM 6:13:01PM 1:09:01PM 4:09:02PM 4:03:04PM 5:08:02PM

KSite's kido cracked this one.  First, clump all of the times together by hour, starting with 3 AM and ending with 6 PM.  Then, for each grouping of times, order them by their seconds values (X:A:01 then X;B:02 then X:C:03, etc.).  Then, assign alphabetical values to correspond with the minutes digits for each time-- 01 = A, 02 = B, etc.  The resulting message is "I was sure the cops were already after me, so I decided to ditch the mask" (Rich, what a fantastic puzzle!).  This is a line Andrea said in the first of "The Vengeance Chronicles."

Well, this is the fifth DVD chapter of Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, a movie Rich enjoys.  But not having seen the movie (eep), I cannot say what the significance of the number is.  Anyone feel like sharing info?

This is written in the Runic alphabet (thanks Jack-o-lana), and Just Some Dude was the first to translate the passage.

Some people just disappear without a trace-- Those are the lucky ones.  They get dragged off and eaten right away.  Some have survived an attack only to die a horrible death a few days after when their body succumbs to massive infections.  Its mouth contains over thirty deadly bacteria-- One bite, and infection sets in.  It must have some kind of natural protection.  If we could get a blood sample to study, we may be able to synthesize some kind of next-generation super antibiotic... It could be the very thing that saves the human race.

Sounds like movie/TV dialogue, but I can't find the source through Google.  This sounds a lot like what Lex was trying to do in Season 5-- create a super-vaccine to counter a super-virus being created by Brainiac that threatened to destroy all of humanity.

This is Greek writing, and Raven says it translates to

What is the measure of a man?

Apparently, Dr. Fine said this to Lex during one of their discussions (episode reference, anyone?).  The answer, according to the famed philosopher Plato, is "what he does with power."

class snowflake extends medusa; public static void main(); int a=65,b=39,c=211,d=142;&code=char(a) || "." || char(b) || "." || char(c) || "." || char(d);&page1 = getHTML(&code || "/puzzleone.htm");&codepos = &page1.text.getpos("code==");&code = page1.getString(&codepos + 6, 4);unstring(&code,k,L,m,n);/*Griggs transformation*/w = (k+1)^(n-1);x = 2*((2*L)^2)+m)+2;y = L*(m+2)^L+7;z = ((2*n)*(L^2))-(2*n*L)+(n^2);&code = char(w) || "." || char(x) || "." || char(y) || "." || char(z);&retval = snowflake.getSession();snowflake.setPort(22);snowflake.setServer(Bravenet);snowflake.connect(Forum.2632032272/show/493632.Write("Oooooooooooooowwwwww It's scary An IP Tracking System... " || &cr_val || " Like a snowflake..." || &code || 18_crazy.gif); OK, wow.  Wow.  Well, um... Yeah.  OK.  Let's try to break this down a little.  This is definitely a callback to the Snowflakes, and there's another reference to Medusa.  I also see there's a reference to "puzzleone.htm," which is a file on my site.  Then, there's a reference to Molly Griggs... Then, there's a reference to my Bravenet Forum and, more specifically, the mysterious entry with the coded message @╝╚°ü.  As for the rest of it, well, I may have taken two terms of computer science, but it obviously wasn't enough to make sense of this.

"Some things are not meant to be found."

Awwww, another quote from Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life.  I still haven't seen this movie, heh.

The brilliant khufu figured this puzzle out, but the solution is too complicated to paraphrase here, so I'm just going to post the link to the post on KSite in which he explains his findings in detail: click here to read it.  Long story short, the secret message reads

As the summer sun climbs,
A rainbow through the crystal,
In it, a message you will see in the sky.

What that means, we're not sure yet!

EFGQRSHIJDEFCDELMNZABMNO

MNOYUVLMNABCDEFQRSRST

678 x 42

Well, first off, 678 x 42 equals that infamous number 28476.  Hooray for that number!  Now KSite's acent (someone new to the ESP game!) cracked the meaning of the rest of the puzzle.  The letters are all in groups of three consecutive letters-- EFG, QRS, HIJ, etc.  But what acent realized is that the first and third letters in each trio are irrelevant... The important letters are the center letter of each grouping.  Focus on just those letters and the words FRIEDMAN NUMBERS are spelled out.
Plethe the Pirate CY3902

Princess Tura

Collector Amira

Archduke Charlemagne Bolivar

Maura

thebrains07 cracked these five references. In an episode of Andromeda called "The Illusion of Majesty," there is a quote from Plethe the Pirate that relates to the theme of masks:

We all wear the twin masks of emotion,
Happy or sad, haunted or hunted,
You choose the mask, you choose the risk.
You choose your own poison.

In that episode, the character Princess Tura was played by Krista Allen (Desiree Atkins).

In the Andromeda episode "Time Out of Mind," Collector Amira was played by Erica Durance (Lois Lane).

In the Andromeda  episode "Into the Labyrinth," Archduke Charlemagne Bolivar was played by James Marsters (Professor Fine/Brainiac).

In the Andromeda episode "The Heart of the Journey, Maura was played by Emmanuel Vaugier (Dr. Helen Bryce).

thebrains07 translated this from Kryptonian to English.  The passage reads as follows:

Physical objects are not in space
But these objects are spatially extended
In this way, the concept of empty space loses its meaning.

I then Googled this translation and found it's a quote from Albert Einstein about matter, space, and relativity.

Like a snowflake in a fiery grip...

Again, thebrains07 comes to the rescue.  This is a quote from the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Flake # 28476

Hooray for more snowflakes!  Go to the SnowDays site and do a search for flake #28476 (ooooh, that infamous number!).  The third comment on the flake comes from... Molly Griggs.  It reads as follows:

Lion of Egypt masks way into the labyrinth.

I Googled this, but couldn't find anything... Any ideas?
