Prophecy 10

Translation

There's something deep inside all of us.  Something primal.  An inner savage.  I had no choice but to let mine loose.  He'll have to find a way to transcend his limitations, or they will devour him.  I find curiosity an admirable trait.  Nothing stays buried forever... Dear God, no, an unhappy town of cow-tippers.  Gunnerson is fouled on the shot.  Either that, or plaid is bulletproof.  We're just actors.  Even the Romans saved that for special occasions.  I'll tell D.B. Cooper you said hello.  After the massacre, the cavalry torched the settlement to make sure whatever caused it didn't spread.  So much weird... so little time.  You think anyone can help me? The doctors don't even have a name for what's killing me.  Don't underestimate farm boys.  Baling all that hay can make you pretty strong.  In the midst of destruction and sorrow.  I thought you were my lifeline to sanity.  When your son has a gift, your first temptation is to shelter him, hide him away.  No matter where life leads us, we never drift apart.  Every parting is a foretaste of death, and every reunion a foretaste of resurrection.  There's nothing like a son's love for his father.  After all, you only get one.  We're special. People like us don't have limits.  It's amazing what you find when you scrape just under the surface.  More answers are close to home, where height creates the pressure that sustains life.  I wondered when you would finally walk through that door.  A genetic marauder that literally reshapes cells and, to strike an almost biblical note, literally enhances the person's sin.  People do change in Smallville.  But not always because of things that fall from the sky.  If you can live with that decision, so can I, but if you walk out that door, it will never be open to you again.  When you're dealing with someone that twisted, maybe you can never really know what motivates them.  Eightfold survivor of the cosmos.  I am waiting.

Hidden Message

Chimera is revealed when the key is arranged in ascending numerical order.  In Greek mythology, the chimera was a creature made of many different animals-- goat, snake, dragon, and lion.  Appears in the writings of Virgil, Homer, Ovid, and Hesiod.

Interpretation

There's something deep inside all of us.  Something primal.  An inner savage.  I had no choice but to let mine loose.

Sounds like something Lex said after doing something of which Clark didn't approve.

He'll have to find a way to transcend his limitations, or they will devour him.

Not sure about this one...

I find curiosity an admirable trait.

Dr. Swann said this to Lionel in "Legacy."  This also appears in Prophecy 9.

Nothing stays buried forever...

Again, not sure.

Dear God, no, an unhappy town of cow-tippers.

Sounds like something Chloe (Miss Snark!) would say.

Gunnerson is fouled on the shot.

This was on the radio in "Crisis," the time-jump episode where Lana was shot and killed by Adam...  But only in an alternate reality!  BAH!

Either that, or plaid is bulletproof.

Someone said this to Clark.

We're just actors.

Is this just a shout-out to the cast?

Even the Romans saved that for special occasions.

Lex said this to Clark in "Metamorphosis" in reference to when he found him strung up on a cross as the Scarecrow in "Pilot."

I'll tell D.B. Cooper you said hello.

D.B. Cooper is the suspect in the only unsolved skyjacking case.  Read more about it here.  What that has to do with Smallville, I'm not sure.

After the massacre, the cavalry torched the settlement to make sure whatever caused it didn't spread.

Chloe said this to Clark in "Nicodemus," explaining how the Nicodemus flower caused the settlers of a town to get violent and slaughter each other.  This information came from a book Lex checked out at the library called The Nicodemus Diary.

So much weird... so little time.

Sounds like Chloe's motto.

You think anyone can help me? The doctors don't even have a name for what's killing me.

Dr. Hamilton said this to Pete in "Duplicity."

Don't underestimate farm boys.  Baling all that hay can make you pretty strong.

Clark said to Darius, Lex's bodyguard," in "Shattered."

In the midst of destruction and sorrow.

I thought you were my lifeline to sanity.

When your son has a gift, your first temptation is to shelter him, hide him away.

Jonathan said this to Clark about Jordan Cross' father making Jordan hide his ability to see how others will die in "Hereafter."

No matter where life leads us, we never drift apart.

Every parting is a foretaste of death, and every reunion a foretaste of resurrection.

A quote by the German poet Schopenhauer.

There's nothing like a son's love for his father.  After all, you only get one.

Lionel said this to Clark, unaware of the ironic fact that Clark has two fathers (not in a Heather Has Two Mommies way... Let's keep the HoYAY! to Clark and Lex, hee.).  This also appears in Prophecy 11.

We're special. People like us don't have limits.

In "Obsession," Alicia told Clark, "We're special, Clark. People like us don't need boundaries and limitations."

It's amazing what you find when you scrape just under the surface.

More answers are close to home, where height creates the pressure that sustains life.

This is a quote from the Smallville comic (#7) in which this Prophecy was originally posted.  It's part of a message from Dr. Arthur Walsh to Chloe through Carter Bickson, telling her to look in the Smallville water tower to find more answers for her Level 3 investigations begun in the Chloe Chronicles.  Also appears in Prophecy 12.

I wondered when you would finally walk through that door.

Dr. Swann said this to Lionel in "Legacy."

A genetic marauder that literally reshapes cells and, to strike an almost biblical note, literally enhances the person's sin.

TPTB said this in an interview to explain how meteor rocks (kryptonite) affect people exposed to them.

People do change in Smallville.  But not always because of things that fall from the sky.

This sounds like a line from a past episode...  Can anyone remember it?

If you can live with that decision, so can I, but if you walk out that door, it will never be open to you again.

Dr. Swann said this to Clark in "Rosetta," warning him to not hastily leave without learning everything Swann knows.

When you're dealing with someone that twisted, maybe you can never really know what motivates them.

Eightfold survivor of the cosmos.

Another reference to kryptonite.  This phrase appears in other Prophecies.

I am waiting.

The message from Jor-El to Jonathan ("Legacy")...  He was waiting for Jonathan to give him his son back.
