Interpretation
Return to Creekside
This either refers to the Creekside where Ezra received his Prophecies (we ARE expecting more in the future) or to the Creekside Foundry. I'm guessing it's the latter as the Foundry was where BugBoy met his demise ("Metamorphosis") but, more recently, where the kidnapped (but not Burninated) Chloe was being held hostage in "Gone."
Live above us
Live among us
He must choose
Definitely referring to Clark. Does he live above mankind as the mighty Kal-El of Krypton, or does he remain simply Clark Kent?
Sauveur de LuthorCorp?
In "Crusade," when we visit downtown Vancou-- er, um, PARIS-- and meet Jason Teague for the first time, posters of Lex Luthor on the cover of Forbes magazine decorate the scene. The caption on these posters read Sauveur de LuthorCorp?, which, as any good little French student knows, translates roughly to Savior of LuthorCorp?
He will see his face
For the first time
When the transformation begins.
A reference to "Transference," in which Lionel and Clark switch bodies. KSite's man O' tomorrow points out that this can also be a reference to "Onyx," in which Lex splits into two Lexes/Lexii/? and literally sees himself for the first time.
I wanted to talk about the dead man
He said it would fetch bad luck
He said he might come back to haunt us.
This is from "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," by Mark Twain. The excerpt is from Chapter Ten, and the entire paragraph reads as follows:
After breakfast I wanted to talk about the dead man and guess out how he come to be killed, but Jim didn’t want to. He said it would fetch bad luck; and besides, he said, he might come and ha’nt us; he said a man that warn’t buried was more likely to go a- ha’nting around than one that was planted and comfortable.
Martha read this passage to a comatose Jonathan in "Crusade."
Footprints in sand
Lex, looking for artifacts in Egypt, tells his archeologists to cover up all traces of his visits. One tells him their presence will be like footprints in the sand.
Neither is ordinary
One knows
The other will learn
Hmm... My guess is this refers to Clark and Lex. Neither are ordinary, and Clark knows the truth about himself... Will Lex figure it out someday?
Never its mysteries are exposed
To the weak human eye unclosed
So wills its king.
This is a quote from Edgar Allen Poe's "Dreamland." The full stanza in which this snippet appears:
For the heart whose woes are legion
'Tis a peaceful, soothing region-
For the spirit that walks in shadow
'Tis- oh, 'tis an Eldorado!
But the traveller, travelling through it,
May not- dare not openly view it!
Never its mysteries are exposed
To the weak human eye unclosed;
So wills its King, who hath forbid
The uplifting of the fringed lid;
And thus the sad Soul that here passes
Beholds it but through darkened glasses.
Seems to speak of death... This is particularly interesting when we consider the many Egyptian references, especially this one (Death shall come on swift wings...), and recall Lex's journeys to Egypt early in Season Four.
Ra made us
Rao made us appeared in a previous Prophecy... Now, we read Ra made us. This is again emphasizing the connection between the Kryptonians and ancient Egyptians. It is also notable that the first Element, the Fire Element, was hidden inside a statue of Ra.
Three months will pass
Between his birth
And his crusade
Clark was reborn inside the cave walls in June and emerged three months later in Season 4's premiere: "Crusade."
We roamed the Range
forded the Creek
tamed the Canyon.
Three words are capitalized: Range, Creek, and Canyon. Range Creek Canyon is a huge archaeological find made recently. It's a settlement of an ancient American Indian civilization, the Fremont. This ancient village has been undisturbed for centuries and became open to the public in August of 2004. Some important headlines about Range Creek Canyon from Google: "The Ancient Treasure Of Range Creek," "Utah Canyon Holds Ancient Secrets," "Utah Canyon Holds Secrets of Ancient Civilization," and "Utah Canyon Yields Secrets of an Ancient Civilization." It is also important to note that the Fremont Indians made drawings of pictures and symbols on rocks.
Connect the jewels
We saw the first Jewel (the kryptonian Crystal) in "Crusade," the second in "Transference," and the third in "Sacred." They were connected by Clark in "Commencement."
Eightfold survivors of the ages
Past and future unite
Paulo maiora canamus
Paulo maiora canamus is Latin for "sing we a somewhat ampler strain," and it's a phrase appearing in the writings of Virgil. Here is an excerpt of the writing of interest, and I've highlighted parts I think may be important.
Muses of Sicily, sing we a somewhat ampler strain: not all men's delight is in coppices and lowly tamarisks: if we sing of the woods, let them be woods worthy of a Consul.
Now is come the last age of the Cumaean prophecy: the great cycle of periods is born anew. Now returns the Maid, returns the reign of Saturn: now from high heaven a new generation comes down...Run even thus, O ages, said the harmonious Fates to their spindles, by the steadfast ordinance of doom. Draw nigh to thy high honours (even now will the time be come) O dear offspring of gods, mighty germ of Jove! Behold the world swaying her orbed mass, lands and spaces of sea and depth of sky; behold how all things rejoice in the age to come.
Obviously, we have more references to the end of an age and Armageddon, but also another reference to a Maid-- as in a lonely battle maid (Heloise or, as we know her, Lois).
Gaze beneath the surface
Search with your soul
Find the emptiness
I'm... not sure about this one. Was this a hint that more Prophecies would be hidden on the Ezra Small page for us to find?
Sam wanted sons
This also appeared in an earlier Prophecy. General Sam Lane wanted sons, but instead, he got Lois.
28476
This number also appears in Part IV, but it's hidden. It also appears in Part V and Part X. It's revealed in the repetition of the letter A. The mystery of this number was finally cracked through Project Mercury.
The puzzle is there
The pieces will fit
Only one will succeed.
The puzzle refers to the hunt for the three kryptonian Crystals. The pieces will fit, but only Clark will put them together.
Incan
Rapa Nui
Minoan
More mythology references, which have been sprinkled throughout the Prophecies...
Ponder every swallow
Mull every turn
Suspect every friend
In "Gone," after Lionel is convicted and says goodbye to Lex at the prison, he warns Lex to always be on guard. Every sip of wine Lex takes, every key he turns, and every friend he makes... He'll never have another moment of peace.
Lonely orphan girl
A Lana reference.
I know now why you cry.
But it's something
I can never do.
Hee! Many of us couldn't help but notice the interesting similarities between the T-1000 villain of T2: Judgment Day and the villain in "Gone" (aptly dubbed "Trent-1000" by some KSiters). At the end of T2, right as Arnold's character is about to lower himself into the molten lava (hee), he wipes a tear from young John Connor's face. "I know now why you cry," he says, "But it's something I can never do." It's really touching... I cry pretty much every time I see it! I LOVE that movie.
Lose not hope,
Sister of Lazarus.
The three will join again.
Lazarus, according to the New Testament, is the brother of Martha. In this case, Martha refers not to the biblical character, but to Martha Kent. This is a reassurance that she, Jonathan, and Clark would be reunited, safe and sound, in "Crusade." See Prophecy 4 for the first Sister of Lazarus reference.
Between the conception and the creation
Between the emotion and the response
Falls the shadow.
A quote from T.S. Eliot's "Hollow Man." The interesting part is as follows:
Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow...
Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
Life is very long
Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow...
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but with a whimper.
Yet another ominous reference to the world's impending doom! Also note that Part III contains part of another T.S. Eliot poem.
It has begun.
Armageddon has begun!
