Baby Kal-El traveled to Earth in a spaceship Jor-El created. When Jonathan and Martha found the child, who they named Clark (Martha's maiden name), they took his spaceship and hid it in their storm cellar to cover up their new son's extraterrestrial origins. Here is the ship as it appeared in "Pilot."
It looks a lot like a giant pinecone, which is why it's a good thing it looked different in all other episodes. The better version-- the one that actually looks like something that would be soaring through space:
The ship was activated by two pieces of Kryptonian technology: the ship's key and the ship's heart. When activated, the ship took many forms, including the following:
